The one book that I will always remember reading from my childhood is called "The Butterfly Lion" by Michael Morpungo. I picked it as one of my books to read during a reading challenge in Primary 7 and I read it over and over again.
It's the story of a white lion cub found by a boy named Bertie in the African veld. He looks after the orphaned lion until he is sent to boarding school. The lion gets sent to the circus but Bertie vows to find him again and take him home. Many years later, he finds the lion and moves to England where they live together, along with Bertie's wife, until the lion dies. To commemorate the lion, they carve him out of chalk on the hillside for all to see.
It has been so long since I read the book that I can't remember the full story but I think it was told from the perspective of Bertie's wife and she tells it to a boy who has run away from boarding school, just like Bertie did. I just remember it captivating me so and I can't wait to get it for the kids to read.
