Friday Night Cuddles

Friday night is one of my favourite nights of the week. Zachary and his Dad head out for a few hours; Zachary to swimming and Husband to the gym. Charlotte and I cuddle up on the couch and we watch a movie.

Tonight it's The Lion King...which is only slightly depressing given it's almost a year to the day that we went to Disneyworld.

Me & Mine 2016 - September

How is it the end of September already? This month has flown by! I remember this time last year we were getting super excited about our imminent trip to Florida, and the month dragged by. But not this year. With no exciting holiday to look forward to, the month has flashed before us.

We headed down to one of our local beaches for our family photos. It was so windy and what a mistake it was to wear our hair down (Charlotte and I!) But it may have been our last visit to the beach for the year so we made the most of the visit.

I've been loving working but I do miss spending time with the kids. I know they would be at school all day anyway but it is the simple things like dropping them off at school or picking them up at the end of the day that I miss. But I love my job and I really, really enjoy it. To walk out of your workplace with a smile on your face is a good thing. And a rare thing. It just makes me cherish our time together more.

Husband has been working super hard, as always. Some weeks he works Monday to Sunday without a break but I know he enjoys his job. It's the necessary evil of life; work to pay the bills and do things you enjoy. He's been back at the gym more too, which he is loving.

Zachary has been loving going to the swimming on a Friday night with his best friends. It must seem like quite a grown up thing for him and he enjoys the freedom to go himself. Husband usually goes into the gym whilst they are in the pool so he can keep an eye on them but we know they are safe and having fun. He's practising hard for his next Karate grading which is a yellow tab on his brown belt. He's on track for black belt at 16 if not sooner.

Charlotte got her glasses this month. She really wanted to get some and then decided that she didn't when she realised she did in fact need glasses. She only needs them for reading or when she has to concentrate and she's doing well in wearing them so far. We've been reading Matilda together. I love the Roald Dahl books so I'm looking forward to reading them with her.

Next month, tomorrow in fact, is my birthday. We have the October half term coming up too although I'll be working so we won't be up to much. But I'm looking forward to a few nights out over the next few weeks and starting my Christmas shopping soon. I know, but it will be here before we know it!

Basil and Neroli from Jo Malone

About a month ago there was a post circulating Facebook from Jo Malone. You filled in some details to get a free sample in the post. I'm a huge Jo Malone fan so I filled it in and waited for my sample to arrive.

Now I was hoping for one of the small sample bottles you usually get when you buy Jo Malone so I was a bit disappointed to receive a card with a wet wipe in the scent of Basil and Neroli.

Despite the let down in sample, the scent is amazing. I didn't think I would like it but it is gorgeous. I don't know how to describe it other than it is quite warm and would be lovely for the Autumn.

My all time favourite is still Pomegranate Noir.

My Autumn Fashion Picks

As the weather turns cooler and the mornings and evenings are darker, I love clearing out all of my summer clothing and updating my Autumn/Winter wardrobe.

There are a few pieces that I feel are key items in this season's wardrobe. You need a good jacket, a cosy jumper, a great pair of boots, skinny jeans and fabulous accessories. Here are a few of my favourite items:

From Tommy Hilfiger, I love these skinny black jeans and beautiful trench coat. A trench coat is the perfect Autumn coat as you can layer underneath it to keep you warmer but it's light enough for those warmer Autumn days. Skinny jeans go with just about anything so they are always a staple item in my wardrobe, whatever the season.

I love this jumper teamed with a vest top from Ralph Lauren. It's lightweight style makes it perfect for Autumn. I'm not a huge fan of the turtle-neck style jumpers; crew necks are much more my style. You could put this over a shirt as the weather gets colder or add a patterned or coloured scarf to brighten up your look. 

No outfit is complete without accessories. I love biker style boots so these Michael Kors ankle boots are perfect for my Autumnal look. I love the gold MK detail and the low heel which makes this outfit suitable for the evening time as well as the day time. I also love this bag from Michael Kors as it reminds me of the Chanel Boy bag but at a fraction of the price.

Delicious Healthy Snacks

I'm always feeling ravenous when I get in from work and it is so tempting to snack on something sugary or full of carbs whilst I am making the dinner.

Husband bought these crackers from Tesco last week and they have been going down a treat as a fairly healthy and pretty delicious post-work snack. I have, maybe 6, and it keeps me going until dinner time. The kids love them too!

Berry Mix Smoothie

I'm still having my breakfast smoothie every day and it definitely sets me up and makes me feel pretty good. I'm packing as many fruits as I can to increase my fruit portions for the day too. 

This week I'm having a berry mix of strawberries and blueberries, kiwi, banana, mango and orange. It is really yummy!

Sunday Bubble Baths with Lush

Some Sunday mornings, we are up bright and early with people to see and places to be. But not this Sunday morning. This Sunday morning was for relaxing in a bubble bath with something lush from Lush.

This is bubble bar called Candy Cream and it smells just like parma violet. It contains almond oil so it leaves your skin feeling really soft. I used the full thing but you could probably get away with using just half.

I stayed in my bath for over an hour. It was bliss.

Is it a Poo or an Ice cream?

Emojis are by far one of my favourite forms of communication on social media. I use them in pretty much every sentence of a group chat, sometimes even replacing words with the emoji. The kids love them too. Charlotte loves sending multiple emojis to her Dad via Whatsapp. 

We found these in a shop called Papyrus. Charlotte, at the top of her voice said, "can I get a poo?" There was debate for awhile that it wasn't a poo; it was an ice cream. I think it's much more fun to call it a poo. I certainly use it in place of the naughty word!

There were quite a few other cushions there including one of my favourites: the monkey! But sadly my most favourite one wasn't there. Can you guess which one it was?

Wearing Glasses

Charlotte is getting on great with her glasses. We don't have to remind her to put them on, she just fetches them from her room whenever she needs them.

I think she looks so cute wearing them. Hopefully they are really helping her and we'll notice a difference in her reading and school work very quickly.

By Candle Light

It's getting a little darker earlier in the evening and that makes me a little bit happy. I love Autumn, especially seeing the leaves turn from green to brown and falling gently to the ground. I love that the mornings are crisp but, as the day goes on, it gets milder. The sun is so pretty at this time of year. 

I also love putting my candles and burners on. During the Summer, it's far too warm for them, even in the evening. However, Autumn is just perfect for flickering flames and rooms filled with just candle light.

Her New Glasses

Bless her! Charlotte was so excited to pick up her new glasses today and she couldn't wait to put them on when she got home. Getting kids to wear glasses can be a battle in itself so it makes it so much easier that she wants to wear them.

She has two pairs and this red pair are for her to wear at school. Her second pair are for at home and, just in case, as a back up pair if the first pair get lost or damaged.

Funny Things My Kids Say #42

We were having breakfast of cereal and waffles, which both Zachary and Charlotte finished. Charlotte then asked if she could have a banana. Of course I said yes because what could be more satisfying than your child asking for something healthy and not more Coco Pops at any time of day?

She ate about half of the banana and headed to the food bin.

"Can you finish that banana please Charlotte? Eating half of it is just a waste!"

She turned to look at me as she carried on walking to the bin and said, "well, no because we had a really big lunch yesterday!"

A Morning Portrait

When you've had a four day weekend, the first day back to school and work is always the hardest to get up for.

It wasn't too bad this morning. We were ready and out the door by 7.50am, which meant we had time to have a quick pose in front of the fence. And I realised that I really need to pull the weeds up in the garden!

Dessert...the Best Part of Any Meal

It's a local holiday today so we were off school and work. My Grandma popped through for a visit and, after a stressful eye test for Charlotte, we went for some lunch at one of our favourite restaurants. 

I had Cajun vegetable crepes, my Grandma had some chicken strips with salad and chips, Zachary had a beef burger and Charlotte had tempura chicken with chips. It was all really yummy!

Of course, our favourite part of any meal is the dessert and I often choose where to eat based on their dessert menu. Shock, horror, I was too full for a pudding but the kids enjoyed their chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream.

My Child Might Need Glasses

Many, many years ago or certainly when I was at school anyway, if you were a kid that wore glasses, you were subjected to cruel nicknames and a lot of teasing. I didn't need glasses nor did I tease anyone for it, but I had friends who wore glasses and they were often referred to as "specky four eyes!" It was horrible! 

Times have moved on, people have become more educated or less ignorant, and probably because of celebrities being more accessible to our younger generation, it seems to have become cool amongst kids to wear glasses. By that I mean, more people seem to wear glasses when they, in fact, don't have a prescription. Wearing glasses has become a fashion statement!

The kids went for an eye test today. It was Zachary's annual check up and Charlotte's first eye test, aside from the ones they have in nursery and Primary 1. Zachary has never needed glasses so far and, after his test today, he still doesn't need them.

Charlotte has wanted glasses for ages. She is forever putting her Dad's on, which he needs for reading, and they actually really suit her. And, after her test today, she might get her wish.

She has been complaining that she can't see the words in her books properly; they look fuzzy or they are "dancing around the page". She mixes some letters up such as B and D and sometimes reads words backwards such as was as saw. She also sometimes reads numbers backwards such as 16 being 61. I know that this can be common in children who are learning to read but I've asked the school for extra help with her reading to rule anything out there. But we also need to check if it is her sight that is a factor in all of this. 

Charlotte was apprehensive in her test and, because of her occasionally reading letters and numbers backwards, I think she got even more tense and just stopped when she realised she hadn't read something right. The optician thinks she might have a slight prescription for distance but she couldn't tell because Charlotte managed all of the other tests fine. With the 3D test, she picked up a really tricky 3D image. She's not colour blind and her eyes didn't react with the light - or the optician didn't pick anything up from the light test. 

So she's to go back tomorrow and have the dreaded drops. She's not happy about it and has totally changed her mind about wanting glasses. I'm not sure how I'm going to get her to sit to get these drops in as she hates eye drops from the conjunctivitis days. Bribery might be the only way; a promise of a new toy or Pokemon cards. 

Waffle and Ice Cream Pudding

We had a very yummy pudding after our dinner tonight; waffles with ice cream and toffee sauce. It was really, really good.

I bought a frozen pack of Birdseye waffles and a tub of Tesco's finest vanilla and caramel ice cream. We already had toffee sauce at home. The waffles go in the toaster for 3 minutes, lashings of toffee sauce on top and then finished off with a scoop of ice cream.

So That Was Summer 2016

I haven't joined in with The Ordinary Moments in a few weeks, mostly because nothing exciting has been happening here aside from work, work and more work. And that's the kind of boring ordinary moments that don't make for interesting writing or reading.

Last week I put together a video of our summer holiday adventures. I did the same in 2015 and 2014; it's something nice to look back on and remember the fun we had and the memories we made.

Our summer was definitely very ordinary. We didn't go abroad or even have a staycation. We spent our time in the house on wet days and in the garden on sunny days. We went to the park a lot.

There was an exciting trip to Manchester for my Sister's wedding part way through which was a wonderful day with all of our family. The kids really enjoyed attending their first wedding and behaved amazingly well, despite it being a long, hot day for them. They were loving the sweetie cart and dancing with their cousin.

This was the summer Charlotte learnt to go the swing by herself and Zachary was brave enough to jump off the swing whilst standing. Life goals for children! It was the summer they spent days with their Papa, visiting the farm park and the beach.

As much as it would have been nice to go away on holiday, as nothing can really beat the feeling of getting on plane and going somewhere together, it really was the most perfect summer holiday for us. It was very chilled and easy going which is just what I needed before the new term started and I went back to work full time.

The Best Salmon Fishcakes

If you've followed my blog for some time, you'll know how much I love cake. I'm also trying to eat more fish so a fishcake was always going to go down well in my book. Of course, this isn't filled with buttercream and jam but this salmon and Alaska pollock fishcake is one of the best fishcakes I have ever eaten. It comes from a brand called The Funky Fish Kitchen.

Lots of lovely salmon and pollock mixed in with ginger, chilli, potato, spring onion and honey, coated in a light tempura batter; a recipe for deliciousness. You get two in a pack but one with a salad is just enough to fill you up at lunch time.

Exercising at the Park

We met up with my Sister-in-Law and niece this morning and headed to a nearby park. The kids loved having a shot on the exercise equipment. Just look at Charlotte's face! She's really working out there.

It's been such a beautiful day here and we've been enjoying the September weekend holiday by spending most of the day outdoors.

Hopefully this lovely weather will last a little while longer!

Detox Tea for Weight Loss?

Detox products claim to help rid your body of the harmful toxins. So starting your day with the consumption of a detox product not only makes your day healthy but also helps you get rid of those extra pounds.

Being a mum and working full time means I am hardly left with time where I could regularly hit the gym or work out. However, one my colleagues at work told me about tea detoxes. It involves drinking two cups of tea everyday to lose weight and detox those harmful body toxins! I couldn't wait to try it to see if it would help me shed a few pounds. 

A tea detox usually involves drinking a specific brand of tea for 14 days; once in the morning and once before bed whilst following a particular diet plan. They are short and promise significant amounts of weight loss and a whole host of other health benefits such as increased metabolism, improved digestion and a healthy glow.

This really worked for me and trust me, I lost a couple of pounds in just in a week! For the best results, I would recommend drinking a cup once in the morning when you wake up to get your body functioning, and once in the night after you're done with all your chores and have time to relax.

My mornings now start with a cup of lukewarm water and a tea-bag and, after putting the kids to bed after a tiring day, I take some time off for myself to relax while I sip on another cup of  detox tea whilst indulging in a few rounds of online bingo!

A Great Start

I am loving this Granola for breakfast. The oats are coated in honey and there are lots of fruit pieces mixed in with the oats, making it super tasty. 

It's quite filling so I only need a small bowl and I'm not hungry again until lunch time; ideal when you work from after breakfast until your lunch break.

Sibling Moments #33

We spent a windy afternoon at the beach last weekend. The sun was shining so it seemed silly to waste the day at home.

Now that we're back at school, the kids have been spending less time together during the week. After school, they play in the garden together. At the weekend, they play their tablets or they'll sit together and play Xbox or watch a movie.

They can be tired after school and, combined with the heat we've been having recently, it can make them a bit grumpy. They've been falling out a lot more over the last few weeks. Charlotte likes to wind Zachary up and he likes to boss her around. Neither likes either. Just the other day, Charlotte hid her hula hoop from Zachary because she didn't want him to have a shot of it. And, of course, I get dragged into the argument.

Oh the joys!

But then they have very sweet moments, like the cuddles at the beach or Zachary giving Charlotte his extra Pokemon ball so she would have one to play with too. 

They can be so cute and then little devils as quick as you can flip a coin. Must be their Gemini personalities.

Fish is the Dish

We've been trying to eat fish at least once, sometimes twice a week and we had a really lovely dinner today; sea bass with rice and vegetables. It was delicious.

Sea bass is so easy to cook. You pan fry it in a little olive oil for 4 minutes skin side down and then add a knob of butter and flip it skin side up for a minute. A little salt and pepper and it tastes amazing.

Happy Birthday Roald Dahl

Today would have been Roald Dahl's 100th birthday and to celebrate, we wore yellow as it was his favourite colour. 

Charlotte is learning about Roald Dahl at school and she has been asking to read his books. We'd stored them all up in our loft as Zachary read them quite a few years ago himself. She chose three to start with; Matilda, Esio Trot and The Magic Finger. 

We're reading Matilda together and she is reading The Magic Finger herself. I didn't get the chance to read them with Zachary but I can remember reading them as a child and loving his stories so I'm really happy that both my children will have experienced his books and be able to share them with their children in the future.

I Just Want to Sweat

Getting up at 6am is tough, but it's necessary if I want to squeeze in a workout. I don't go to the gym; I'm not a fan of the machines or the classes. I'd rather do my own thing. 

I used to use a lot of DVDs; Ministry of Sound, Shaun T and even soap star workouts. I tried them all. But I got fed up of the same old, same old, even when I was mixing them up every week. 

I recently came across a YouTube channel from Lucy Wyndham-Read, personal trainer to Anna SacconeJoly and many others I'm sure. She makes short workouts that are really simple to follow at home and I'm loving them. I made a playlist of my favourites but as she is continually adding content, I'm always getting a new workout to try. And I'm sore after every workout so I know the exercises are working.

My Tips For Keeping Healthy as a Mum

As a parent, I am constantly thinking and making sure that Zachary and Charlotte are getting all the nutrients they need to maintain a healthy body and mind. They have the occasional treat but mostly they have a pretty varied yet balanced diet. Because I'm always thinking about their food needs, I often forget to think about my own. But it's equally as important to look after my body as I get older. And the same goes for Husband.

Barchester are a healthcare provider who specialise in top quality care, with care homes all over the UK, and they have developed a really informative nutrition guide to help us get the best out of the foods we eat to help maintain a healthy body. Of course I'm not that old yet, even though the kids would tell me otherwise, however, like anything in life, the earlier you start taking care of yourself, the better it is in the long run. These are just some of the things I've been doing to try and make sure I'm getting the right nutrients into my body:

Drinking lots of water

I don't drink juice and I very rarely drink more than one cup of tea or coffee a day; sometimes I don't have one at all. But I drink so much water because I know it's the best thing for your body. As soon as I wake up, I have a pint of water. Apparently this kick starts your metabolism for the day. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure but at least it gets me started early on my water quota for the day. I drink as much water as I can throughout the day and drink at least a litre before I go to bed. And yes, I'm constantly at the toilet!

Eating oily fish once a week

I'd eat fish every day if I could but buying fresh fish can be expensive so I keep it to once a week. Our favourite is salmon or tuna, served with potatoes and steamed veg or with rice and veg through it. We also eat whitefish such as cod or haddock once a week but this is usually in batter and out of the oven so it isn't quite as healthy.

Smoothies for breakfast

I struggle to eat lots of fruit throughout the day. I'd sooner eat nothing than to snack on the likes of grapes, raisins, nuts etc. The easiest way I've found to overcome this is by making up a batch of fruit smoothie and keeping it in the fridge to drink every day through the week. My favourite has to be strawberry, banana, kiwi, mango, orange and passion fruit.

Taking multi-vitamins 

Vitamins are something I've always taken. My Stepdad worked in pharmaceuticals for years so taking supplements was just part of our every day routine and it's something I've carried on into adulthood and instilled on Zachary and Charlotte. I take a supplement that contains iron because I have been known to be on the verge of anaemia and I feel they do make a different as I notice I feel more tired f I miss them.

Everything in moderation

I allow myself a treat every weekend and if there are biscuits or chocolates doing the rounds in the staff room at lunch time, I'm not passing on one; I certainly wouldn't eat the full pack or box. I think, definitely for myself anyway, if I were to deny myself something, I would end up wanting it even more.

I haven't had a roast beef dinner in such a long time so I was really excited for our dinner tonight. We love our meat medium rare served with roast potatoes, veg and, of course, Yorkshire puddings. It was the perfect dinner after a day at the beach.

Charlotte's Autumnal Look

I am loving Charlotte's outfit from today. Everything she is wearing is from Next and it has such an Autumnal look about it. 

Autumn is one of my most favourite seasons. I love the colours of the leaves turning from green to golden and the feeling of excitement that Halloween and Christmas are just around the corner. I also love Autumn fashion, breaking out the boots and cosy jumpers.

Perfecting Girly Hairstyles

The extent of my styling capabilities, pre-daughter, were a pony tail and a plait. I could, obviously, blow dry my hair but not into any particular style; I always had to straighten it. I marvelled at those people who could do amazing things with hair and make it look so simple. 

Then Charlotte came along and, as soon as she was big enough to sit and let me, I practised doing different things to her hair. I found the fishtail braid the easiest and I'm getting better at braiding her hair from the top right down to the bottom. 

One day I might be able to do amazing things with her hair but for now, I'm happy with my braids.

Purchasing my Christian Louboutin Shoes

A few weeks ago, whilst visiting the city centre, we popped into a Christian Louboutin stockist and I finally bought my shoes. If you've read my blog for awhile, you'll know I have wanted a pair of Louboutins for a few years so I was really excited to get my first pair.

These were a pretty extravagant purchase but I've been saving up for them and I've done a lot of research and trying on to find myself the perfect pair. I bought the Pigalle 100 in black patent. They aren't too high, making them pretty easy to walk in. I took a size 5 which is my shoe size but Louboutins aren't always true to size, which is why it took me so long to find a pair to fit me comfortably.

They cost £425.00. Let's not talk about the price too much...

I've wanted to invest in pair of Louboutins for such a long time because they are beautiful, statement shoes. Just that flash of red on the sole as you walk tells you that someone is wearing Louboutins. Of course, there are plenty of fakes out there, but none of them will be anywhere near as well made as these feel and look.

I'm hoping to get myself a nude pair too as black and nude shoes are staple wardrobe items, and they go with  pretty much everything. I can't wait to wear them for my birthday and at Christmas for our Christmas dinner.

I would also like to get some funky looking ones as there are so many beautiful designs in his collection.

My Favourite Time

Bedtime is one of my favourite times of the day. Not because the kids have been running riot and I can't wait to get them to bed but because it is one of the few times, especially during the week, that we can sit down and read a book together.

Zachary reads his own books and has done for some time, but Charlotte still loves to have a story read to her, with some of her favourite teddies tucked in beside her.

Tonight we read The Little Raindrop by Joanna Gray which is a great story to learn about the rain cycle.

Healthy Eating is Making me Hungry

Dinner tonight was steamed salmon with a Birdeye Mediterranean Rice Fusion side, and it was really yummy. We've been trying to eat more fish in our diet and we really enjoy salmon. Next week I think I'll get some sea bass or tuna steaks.

However, all this healthy eating is leaving me starving come 8.30pm.

A Healthy Start

I find it really hard to eat fruit throughout the day so I've been enjoying making smoothies to have first thing in the morning. I find that they are really filling, along with my cereal and toast, and I put as much fruit in them as possible so I can get some of my 5 a day into me as soon as I can. 

I make my smoothie up every Sunday evening and store it in a large jug. I make enough to last me a full week so I don't have to rush around every day, making it fresh. 

This one contains strawberry, banana, kiwi, mango, passion fruit and orange. It also contains some strawberry yogurt to cut some of the sharpness out. It tastes amazing! And because I'm drinking smoothies every day, the kids are coming round to the idea of drinking them too.

I don't hide the fact there were times I turned up to the nursery or school run still wearing my sweats because I couldn't be bothered didn't have time to get myself and two children dressed and out the door on time in the mornings. However, as the kids have gotten older and more independent, I am more able to get myself looking presentable.

As much as I would like to think it doesn't matter how you look at the school gates, and as long as your children are turned in clean and tidy, school run style is definitely a thing. Some parents are very glamorous whereas I like to keep it casual.

This bag is pretty versatile in that it can be worn on the shoulder, across your body or you can just carry it in your hand or on your arm. This means you can wear a dressy outfit or a more chilled out outfit. Because I quite like the relaxed look for the school run, I chose the following items of clothing:


I love skinny, low rise jeans and these Selected Femme Annie MJ W skinny jeans are in one of my favourite denim washes and cut how I like to wear my jeans. Skinny jeans can be dressed up with a smart blouse and heels or dressed down with trainers, pumps or boots and a t-shirt or jumper. These are super versatile meaning you could wear them pretty much every day for the school run and just change your top and shoes.


As we are coming into Autumn, I love nothing more than a cosy jumper over a tank top and teamed with my skinny jeans. This cute jumper from Molly Bracken is definitely something I would wear on the school run. It's really simple, a beautiful colour and looks like it would be a great fit.

Ankle boots

Matching the colour of my boots to my bag is something I try to do with an outfit. I found these Clark's Pita Sedona boots which I think will match the bag pretty well. I prefer ankle boots over knee or even calf high boots because they are easier to drive in. Whenever I wear wellies or calf/knee high boots, the tops always get caught on my seat which is very annoying! Plus I think ankle boots suit my style better.


To complete the school run outfit, I would go for this Quilted Bomber jacket. I love the style of these jackets and I think they go with pretty much anything, again making it a very versatile piece. It's perfect for Autumn and getting back to school because it's not too heavy.
