Tartan for St Andrews Day

Happy St Andrew's Day!

To celebrate, the kids were allowed to wear tartan to school. Zachary doesn't own anything tartan but Charlotte still has these shorts she got from Next two years ago. They still fit her!

She looks so grown up in the photo, despite her petite frame.

I'm having an early night because I feel rotten. There is a sickness bug doing the rounds and I think I might be getting it. Bleugh!

Me & Mine 2016 - November

I can't believe that it is December tomorrow. This month has gone by so quickly but it also feels like this photo was taken ages ago. In fact, it was taken on the 4th of November when we went down to the park to watch the fireworks.

This month has been full of highs and lows. We spent an amazing weekend in Aviemore with our best friends, celebrating a birthday but just before we left to go, we had to say goodbye to our cat Morgan, who had become very ill, very quickly.

I have been celebrating this month as I was offered a permanent job doing what I love. I had been covering a position since August, applied for the job in October, had my interview mid November and was offered the job within a few hours. It was such a huge weight off my shoulders and I don't have to worry about trying to find something else to keep me going. I'm working full time which is a huge transition from working part time for so many years but I get every weekend off which is great and I'm home for 4.30 most nights. But it will make such a huge difference to our lives in so many ways.

Husband had to buy himself a new car, well new to us, as his car died a few weeks ago. He had a Peugeot and it was 14 years old but did the job of getting him to and from work. However the back end was collapsing and it was no longer safe to drive. He bought himself a Vectra with good mileage for it's 10 years and it has been re-mapped so it is actually faster than my 3 series which is obviously a huge thing for him; he loves a fast car.

Zachary has been reading a lot this month and has discovered a love for Matthew Reilly. He has read Harry Potter, the Maze Runner books and other similar stories for children so Husband introduced him to one of his favourite authors. In terms of content, there are some naughty words in the books but, to be honest, Zachary knows not to use those words and could probably teach us some new words! I'm pretty sure that was the case when we were younger too. I think it's amazing that he loves to read so much.

Charlotte has been loving her horse riding and has grown in confidence despite a fall a few weeks ago. Now that I'm working full time, she has asked if we can go every week and if we can buy a horse however I don't think either of those things will happen any time soon. We have been going for private lessons though so we can have more time with our instructor to work on things we want to improve. For me it has been jumping as I'm pretty comfortable with everything else. For Charlotte, we've been working on her sitting up tall as she sometimes likes to ride like a jocky does in the racing.

December is such an exciting month all round but I'm looking forward to some time off over the festive period, our Christmas dinner at our favourite restaurant and a few nights out. Bring on Santa!

Autumn Flowers

This beautiful bouquet was a present from Husband for getting the job I applied for. I love the colours as they remind me of Autumn and the golden tones in the leaves.

He's Behind You

The kids headed to the Panto with the school today and, as a special treat, they got to "dress down" and wear something festive.

This boy of mine has taken a stretch this year. He is long in the leg which is so not like his Dad and I. He could easily make 6 foot if he keeps growing like he is! He's also super broad on the shoulders which he takes from his Dad. He has muscles and a six pack from doing Karate for the last 5 years. There is no filling him with food. He will definitely eat me out of house and home in a few years. He has the loveliest personality. One of the mum's at the school told me that she was so happy that Zachary was her son's friend especially when he gave up his playtime to sit with her son in the office when he felt unwell. He's super loyal to his friends and has the best bunch of mates; the type of friends who will be friends for the rest of their lives. And he's so clever. So clever.

I don't know what we did to deserve such an incredible boy but I thank my lucky stars every night that he is our son. He makes us so proud every day. Both of our children do.

The kids told us the Panto was amazing and they thoroughly enjoyed it. They are definitely feeling a lot more festive now.

366 Project 2016 - Day 333

A Trip to Aviemore

Last weekend, after a very tragic start to the day where we had to say goodbye to our furry friend Morgan, the kids were picked up by their Gran and Husband and I headed to Aviemore for a weekend of drinking and fun. We were spending the weekend with 6 other couples; people we have been friends with for over 12 years.

We stayed at the Mountain Bear Lodge, just outside Netty Bridge. This lodge is stunning and easily sleeps 14 people. It has its own sauna and a hot tub. The views are just beautiful. It's in the middle of nowhere, with nothing around it so you could easily feel like you are a million miles away from everything and anything.

It was an amazing weekend and we were so relaxed the full time we were there. We drank a fair bit, enjoyed lots of delicious food and spent it with great company. We laughed a lot! I'm so thankful for the truly amazing friends we have.

Of course we missed Zachary and Charlotte but they had a brilliant time with their Gran and her husband, walking the dogs, playing on the farm and eating steak pie.

Amazing memories made all round.

A Girl and Her Horse

Charlotte just adores Jock. He is definitely her favourite pony to ride at the stables by a clear mile. He has a cheeky personality and doesn't behave his 34 years.

We had a riding lesson today and it went really well. My horse was being a bit stubborn but after a firm talking to (and our teacher getting on him to get him behaving), he did a great jump for me.

Charlotte and Jocky were on fire today. They did so well together; she was doing double jumps and going into jumps in canter. She was so excited, she wanted to keep going.

She doesn't know but we've taken Jocky out on loan over the Christmas period so she can go up every day and look after him. She'll also get to ride him twice a day. She loves being at the stables and has made a new friend there. I know she will love being a stable girl when she's old enough.

Daughter's OOTD

With Jack Frost nipping at our noses every morning in the last few weeks, it has definitely been the time to look out the warm jackets and layer up with as many items of clothing as possible. But just because it's pretty grim and dark outside, it doesn't mean our clothes have to be the same!

I love these mustard skinny jeans on Charlotte. The colour really suits her and can be teamed with navy, blue, white and grey to create the perfect Autumn/Winter outfit. I bought these from Next in the last Boxing Day sale and this is the first time she has worn them! I've teamed them with a cream t-shirt, also from Next.

Her jacket and scarf are both from Vertbaudet. The scarf is reversible with a butterfly print on one side and the check print on the other. The check print has mustard through it so it helps pull the outfit together.

Her boots are UGG boots in the Bailey Button style which we got in Florida last year.

She's better dressed than me!

Bingo Keeps a Mother Delighted

Isn’t it true that the presence of a child fills your life with colours? They certainly do! To raise a child properly and see him/her happily growing, we parents have to go through a lot.

Every parent especially a mother has to keep a lot of patience to raise her kid in a proper environment and carry out her roles responsibly.

From morning to evening, a mum’s life seems no less than a roller coaster ride. She has to be both active and alert while looking after the well-being of her child and family.

It is usually a mother who looks more into the details of what needs to be done and what not while taking care of her nearest and dearest.

Motherhood is a challenging phase for every woman on earth and the phase gets tougher when she is a working lady as well! It is never an easy task to manage both work and home simultaneously.

But despite such hectic schedules, a mother should never stop herself from completely relaxing and having fun for some hours every day.

She can indulge in any fun activity be it playing with her kid or surfing the internet for some fashionable attire for her kid or playing her favourite online games! This way a recreational activity refreshes a mother without ever letting boredom or monotony set upon her.

What keeps me going is spending some quality time with my children every day and playing games they both enjoy.

My other favourite pastimes include buying clothes for my children, mostly from shopping sites and playing some fun packed games of online bingo!

Christmas Fayre

It was our Christmas Fayre this evening and it went really, really well. There were lots of fantastic stalls and the school had a great turn out.

I spent £10 trying to win a bottle of vodka from the bottle stall. I did win three bottles of wine and some hand cream which was good. But I really did want that vodka.

Zachary spent his money on the chocolate fountain whilst Charlotte haggled a bargain by getting a little trinket for £1 instead of £2. 50% off? I'll need to take Charlotte shopping with me more often.

I also picked up these really cute fondant biscuits for £1 each. They were really tasty!

The countdown is well and truly on for Christmas with just the Panto and nativity to go. We'll be feeling really festive soon!

366 Project 2016 - Day 329

Saying Goodbye to Morgan

On Friday morning, I was woken up by a strange, almost clicking noise, and wondered what it was. In fact, it was Morgan, our cat, struggling to breathe. Her breathing was really laboured and she was very cold. She seemed lethargic and uncomfortable.

Husband had the day off to get ready for our trip to Aviemore so he took her to the vet. It turned out her chest cavity was full of fluid and she was in a lot of discomfort. It was so bad, the vet struggled to hear her heart beating explaining why she was so cold. Antibiotics were an option but there was no guarantee they would work or that whatever had caused this build up of fluid wouldn't happen again. Husband decided it was the kindest thing to have her put to sleep.

Morgan had been in our family for 13 years. She was in Husband's life only a few months before we met. She was a lovely little cat; timid with people she didn't know but once she knew you were her friend, she was up on your lap cuddling in.

I'll always remember her face the day we brought Zachary home. We sat him in the living room, still in his car seat and she peered in with such a look of horror on her face; she didn't speak to us for a week. But she was soon best friends with Zachary, cuddling into him and sitting with him whenever she could. She was the same when Charlotte came along.

Putting a pet to sleep is a horrible thing to have to do because they become a huge part of your family. But it is also one of the easiest decisions to make if you can see they are in pain or are suffering.

Husband buried her in the garden alongside Casper, Rocky and her big brother Guinness.

Charlotte was really upset. She loves animals so much, she always takes these things really hard.

Sleep well little Morgan.

What I Ate Wednesday

We had seabass for dinner tonight. I love it pan-fried with salt and pepper and a knob of butter.

For breakfast I had two weetabix with semi-skimmed milk and a homemade smoothie.

Lunch was butternut squash and carrot soup, a handful of grapes and a Go Ahead cereal bar.

I was doing so well until I had a bag of Revels Husband brought home for me but I need the chocolate this week. And I only like the coffee and orange creams so it wasn't too bad.

Boohoo Kids Fashion - Review

As a lover of kids' fashion and finding new places to shop for clothes for the kids, I was really interested to see what would be on offer as boohoo.com launched their kids section; boohoo kids.

Browsing the site, there was a limited selection on offer for boys, especially of Zachary's age, so I picked out a few things for Charlotte. There was a lot more choice in the girls section however I felt it was aimed at much older girls. There are a lot of prints and slogans which I'm not overly keen on but I did find some bits that I loved.

Basic t-shirts are great for pairing with skinny jeans, leggings and shorts. I chose a blush pink and grey marl t-shirt in an age 7-8. They feel really soft and stretchy and are a generous fit for the age.

The capped sleeves add a bit of detailing to an otherwise plain scoop necked t-shirt. These cost £5.00 each which is a fantastic price for what feels like pretty well made t-shirts.

Charlotte has a jacket for every weather and every occasion however I'd been looking at getting her a bomber jacket as these are really trendy at the moment. I spotted one on the website for just £20.00.

I love the quilted detailing and the silver zip. It fits great and isn't too heavy, making it perfect for wearing with jumper on those crisp, clear Autumn mornings.

Despite there not being a lot of choice on the site, I was really impressed with the quality of the clothing I received. The delivery time was also really quick and everything was packaged separately within the parcel so colours couldn't run on to one another.

I made a video for my YouTube channel which you can watch below. I go into a bit more detail about the clothes and you can see how they look a bit better too.

I Wished I Was Her

As I woke for work this morning, my head still fuzzy from being sleepy, I crept in to wake Charlotte up. She was still out for the count, cosy as could be,

I left her to wake and checked back on her 10 minutes later. She was awake but still curled up in bed. So I jumped in to bed with her and we had a cuddle.

Sometimes you just need to forget you have to be somewhere by a certain time and enjoy cuddles with your babies. One day they will be the ones rushing out the door without so much as a goodbye.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

Today I received some amazing news.

And as I walked out after receiving this amazing news, the sun was setting and the sky was the most amazing colour.

It was the light at the end of a long, hard journey through an incredible winding tunnel.

We Almost Hit A Deer

We're back from a fantastic weekend away in Nethy Bridge, just outside Aviemore. It was amazing and I'll write a post all about it and the stunning lodge we stayed in but for now I thought I'd share this photo. We almost hit a little Bambi!

Thank God Husband spotted it in time!

A Weekend Away

The case is almost packed for our weekend away with friends. The kids are staying at home with their Gran and they are super excited about it. I don't feel sad that we are leaving them for a few days; of course we'll miss them but they will be in safe hands and probably won't be bothered that they won't see us for two whole days!

I'm really looking forward to chilling out with our best friends. There will be plenty of drink, food and hot tub fun. It's just what I need right before a busy week next week.

What I Have For Breakfast

This is my absolute favourite cereal or granola to have for breakfast. It's from a brand called Mornflake and it's a combination of oats, dried fruits and coconut flakes. It is really delicious and so filling, I don't need anything until lunch time.

Of course, if I had the time in the morning, I would have pancakes with fruit or salmon and poached eggs.

What do you love to have for breakfast?

The Boiler Broke

When you've no hot water or heating because your boiler decided to break, there's only one thing to do. Pack up and head to Papa's for a shower.

Thankfully Husband is good friends with a heating engineer - Husband seems to know someone in every trade - and he's coming out tomorrow to replace the broken part. Thank goodness it's been a lot milder here the last few days.

Sibling Moments #35

Just before bedtime, these two end up wild and giggling like lunatics. I think they enjoy trying to prolong the actual going to bed part but once they are in bed, they are sound asleep within a few minutes.

Their hilarity together is so fun to watch. Sometimes it ends in tears with one or both of them getting hurt because they've been so lively but most of the time it ends in a quick cuddle to say goodnight and a shared giggle before they get told to calm down again.

They are super excited to be going to their Gran's house on Friday to stay for the full weekend. Husband and I are off on an adults only lodge break with some of our closest friends. I'll miss this pair like crazy but I know they'll be in good hands and they'll have so much fun together.

What a mad pair!

What the Postman Brought

I've been sent a box filled with goodies from Redoxon, a vitamin supplement brand. Inside the box are packs of gummies for the kids, vitamin supplements for Husband and I, a beautiful red mug, cosy red socks, a 2017 diary, some hot chocolate and a cinnamon and mandarin candle. I can't wait to get trying the supplements to see if they can keep our health in check during the colder months.

Just A Bit Dirty

Another Sunday spent at the stables, playing with new friends, riding her favourite pony and getting really muddy. Such a fun way to spend the weekend.

Charlotte fell off Jock today. A couple of the horses who don't like one another got a bit close to one another and it kicked off. Literally. The horse behind them spooked and threw his rider off. Jock was behind him and he got a fright too. Charlotte clung to his neck but he backed up and threw her off too. She got a fright but she was straight up and holding on to his reins. She had a cry but calmed down quickly and got back on Jock, who looked very upset that she had fallen off him. Her confidence took a bit of a knock, as it always does when you come off a horse, but she was fine physically. And she did great on him for the rest of her lesson.

Afterwards, she played in the paddock with a new friend she has made. Aside from riding, playing with my horse friends was one of my favourite things to do at the stables. They were pretending to be horses, one of Charlotte's favourite games to play. She wasn't done with falling and landed in a huge muddy puddle. Needless to say she was stripped for getting in the car to go home!

A Little Christmas Shopping

Husband and I headed to a local shopping centre to get a few Christmas presents today. My FIL very kindly came to look after Zachary and Charlotte. They had an afternoon of movies and arts and crafts.

It's very rare that Husband and I get the chance to go out together during the day. Mind you, we don't get out together a lot at night either but the last few times we've been out, it has been at night. Either way, it's great to spend time together just the two of us.

Shopping with Husband can go one of two ways; he spends a fortune and loves it or he ends up grumpy and fed up. I have learnt that the best way to keep him happy is to make sure he is fed and watered and to not keep in a shop for long periods of time. So before we did any shopping, we found food. Then we hit the shops.

We got quite a few things but I've still some more bits to get and I've still to get Husband's Christmas presents. But a lot of it I can get online. The shops were so busy today, I'd like to avoid them now if we can.

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?

Scotland Vs England

Beer in hand for Dad, wrapped in blanket for Zachary, the boys settled down on the couch at 7.45pm to watch the football.

Zachary loves football and whilst Husband was on the phone insuring his new car, we could hear Zachary shouting words of encouragement to the very brightly dressed Scottish team. What were those strips all about?!

Sadly his words of encouragement fell on deaf ears as we lost 3-0. I know that in about 10 years time, the cries of frustration will be much more passionate and uncensored but for now, they enjoyed the father/son time of watching a game of football.

This Very Special Day

November 10th is a very special day in our house for two reasons.

On November 10th, 2005, Husband proposed to me. It happened in our living room and it was completely out of the blue. Having said that, we had already talked about getting married and I had chosen my engagement ring. But I wasn't expecting it to happen that night. We went out the following night to celebrate with our closest friends.

On November 10th, 2007, we had Zachary's Naming Ceremony. It was a small ceremony with family and our closest friends. His Godparents are two of our best friends and they played an important part on both our wedding day and the day we celebrated the birth of our son.

With Remembrance Day being tomorrow, I always remember this special date for the very special meaning it holds for our family.

Don't Watch That Mum!

I love nothing more after a long day at work than sitting with my two babies and having a cuddle. OK so Zachary isn't in this photo...he's getting too cool for photos!

Leaving the kids at 8am and not seeing them again until almost 4.30, sometimes 5.30, is hard. However hearing about their days and seeing them smiling when I pick them up is such a wonderful feeling.

We've been cuddling up to watch Planet Earth Diaries, a programme the kids are loving. I'm not that keen; I love the cute animals but I don't like seeing them getting eaten or worse. The kids have gotten good at telling me to "look away now Mum!"

She's Been Kissing the Boys

I'm not sure about other parts of the UK but we have a saying here that if your teeth start to fall out, you've been kissing the boys or girls. Charlotte always laughs at this whenever one of her teeth fall out...probably because she has!

Charlotte lost her sixth tooth today. She went to bed super excited that the tooth fairy will visit her tonight. She had her tooth wrapped up and under her pillow before I got home from work.

Mummy It's Cold Outside

With snow threatening across Scotland, it is definitely time to get wrapped up in cosy winter warmers. Charlotte has a lot of hats and a few pairs of gloves but not a single one that matched the other. So we headed to Next to see if we could get her a new set.

Of course, Charlotte being Charlotte, she chose this hat and scarf onesie?! because it had an animal of some variety on it. It's so fleecy and warm though and it goes fine with a pair of grey gloves which I picked up in a set of three.

I can just see this getting dragged across the playground at playtime!

366 Project 2016 - Day 313

When You Fall Off, Get Right Back On

As a child, I never once fell off my horse. We had lessons for many years but never really got passed cantering a few strides and I didn't do many jumps. Mostly we spent our time out on hacks, through the forest and down by the beach. I never had the opportunity to experience falling from a horse and getting straight back on.

Well, Sunday changed my luck.

I fell off my horse.

I was in canter, stick in hand, and as the horse came back to trot I lost grip of my stick. I caught it but it smacked the horse on the shoulder so he sped up. Because I was rising now, I was mid air and my foot came out of my stirrup. I held on with my legs as tight as I could and tried to get my centre of gravity back. As he slowed down, instead of turning into the ride so I could get myself back up straight, the horse turned to the left and I lost my grip. I landed on my right bum cheek.

I got straight up and got back on the horse. I went for another canter and it was much better. I learnt from my mistake and that's what will make me a better rider in the long run.

I wasn't scared as I lost my footing or worried about falling. It's just one of the risks you take when you climb up into that saddle. You just have to make sure you land either on your feet softly or on a pretty soft part of your body; and my bum cheeks are pretty soft! But most importantly, if you can, you have to just get back on the horse and get on with it.
